DEFT (Direct Electronic Funds Transfer) is a payment system developed by Macquarie Bank that allows individuals and businesses to make payments easily and securely using a unique DEFT reference number. This system facilitates various payment methods, including credit card payments, direct debits, and BPAY®, ensuring flexibility and convenience for users.

How to Make a DEFT Payment?

  1. Obtain Your DEFT Reference Number: This unique number is provided by your biller and is typically found on your invoice or levy notice.
  2. Choose Your Payment Method:
    • Online Payment: Visit the DEFT website and enter your DEFT reference number to proceed with a one-off payment.​
    • BPAY®: Use your bank’s online banking platform to make a payment using the BPAY® details provided by your biller.
    • Direct Debit: Set up a recurring payment by registering for a DEFT account and linking your bank account or credit card.​
  3. Confirm and Complete Payment: Follow the prompts to finalise your payment. Ensure you receive a confirmation for your records.​

Recent Changes to DEFT Payment Methods

To enhance security and efficiency, DEFT has implemented changes to its payment methods:

  • Phone Payments: As of March 2024, payments can no longer be made over the phone.
  • Cheque Payments: Starting November 2024, mailing cheques to DEFT will no longer be accepted

These changes encourage the use of digital payment options, which are faster and more secure.

  • Do I need to register to use DEFT?
    No, you can make one-off payments without registering. However, registering allows you to set up recurring payments and track your payment history.
  • How do I find my DEFT reference number?
    Your DEFT reference number is typically located on your invoice, levy notice, or any correspondence from your biller. If you’re unable to locate it, please contact your biller directly. ​
  • Who can I contact for assistance with DEFT payments?
    For any inquiries or assistance, you can reach out to the DEFT help desk at 1800 672 162 between 8:30 am and 5:00 pm. ​
  • Are DEFT and BPAY the same?
    DEFT Payment Systems make it easy for you to pay your rent by BPAY®. Payments made on a business day via BPAY will normally be credited to your real estate agent’s account the following business day.
